On A Day Like Today: Aimar scores a vital goal against Tenerife

March 30th, 2002, was the date on which Pablo Aimar scored a LaLiga-defining strike

On March 30th, 2002, Pablo Aimar scored an era-defining goal against CD Tenerife. With seven games remaining of the season, Valencia CF were level on points with league leaders Real Madrid when they headed to the Heliodoro Rodriguez López.

Every victory and every goal counted, and Aimar was the man who was on target in the Canary Islands. In the 76th minute of the game, the midfielder produced a display of power and precision to break the deadlock, with the ball hitting the woodwork twice on its way across the line.

The goal, which was followed by an emotional celebration from the Argentine, kept Valencia CF in the hunt for the title. They would go on to assume the lead in LaLiga on Matchday 34, and from there they would not relinquish it, clinching glory with a 0-2 triumph away to Malaga.

Aimar described the goal as "the most beautiful of my career", and it helped put him onto the pantheon of Argentinian legends to have played for the club, alongside the likes of Mario Kempes, Claudio López, Kily González and Roberto Ayala.

He arrived from River Plate in January of 2001 as the club's most expensive signing, and for the next 5 and a half years he would fill his trophy cabinet, winning two LaLiga titles, the UEFA Cup and the European Supercup. However, the goal scored 18 years ago against Tenerife remains perhaps the most memorable moment of his storied career.
